NOTES
Gerhard Richter applied monochrome gray paint to the reverse sides of these four glass panels. Instead of producing an image, Richter transforms the gray paint on glass into a mirrored surface. Viewers can see themselves and their surroundings reflected; one can interpret these monochromes as large-scale photographic plates of endless exposure. Blurring the boundary between painting and photography, the artist explores the complex relationship between abstraction and representation.

Notes:
The four mirrors in "Gray Mirror" were fabricated in the United States through the Saint Louis Art Museum following detailed consultation with the artist [SLAM document files].
