NOTES
Charles V (1500–1558) held multiple titles including Holy Roman Emperor (1519–1556), which put the German imperial cities in his care. He sided with the Roman church, however, hindering his effectiveness in that predominantly Protestant region. Barthel Beham based this engraving on drawings of Charles V made in Munich in 1530. The chain of the chivalric Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck identifies him as a member of that group of noblemen and knights founded in 1430 by Philip the Good.
