NOTES
Documentary photographer Moneta Sleet Jr. captures Malcolm X in the midst of a protest. In one hand, Malcolm X holds a newspaper with a headline detailing police violence against African Americans at the Nation of Islam Mosque in 1962. In the other hand, he presents an autopsy image of Ronald Stokes, one of the men killed by the Los Angeles Police Department. The various elements of Sleet’s photo create a narrative about police brutality and protests.
