NOTES
Behind prison bars, the silhouettes of four inmates are illuminated against a cell block background. This photo was the main image used for the Our World magazine article “Michigan’s Good-Time Prison” in 1953. Photographer Moneta Sleet Jr. produced an elegant and stylized photo that emphasizes the composition’s contrasting light and dark tones. While the physical separation and postures of the inmates evoke individuality, the inability to see the men’s features represents anonymity. Three of the men clutch the cell bars, creating a connection in an otherwise barren environment.
