NOTES
In "Two Girls," Nolde exploited the translucent qualities of the light and absorbent Japanese paper. He used a wet-on-wet technique, applying paint to the dampened sheet to create a soft staining effect. This approach lends a sense of immediacy and sensuality to the composition as well as an unsettling mystery to the inner states of these two women. Nolde created thousands of watercolors, preferring the medium for its expressive potential and ability to convey feeling through luminous areas of color.
