NOTES

Jean Baptiste Jacques Augustin has depicted his family in chalk using the profile format in emulation of ancient artists who memorialized rulers and heroes in circular coins, medallions, or engraved cameos. The artist himself never traveled to Italy and thus did not experience ancient art firsthand. Rather, he learned this type of antique form from other artists and adapted it in his practice of making portrait miniatures.
