NOTES
This portrait of a young man and his niece on their front porch comes early in Nixon's career when he began to focus less on landscape and more on people. The image is graphically strong, balancing the dark skin tones of the two figures against the white of the house and dress. It is also psychologically rich in the way that the figures relate to the camera and to each other. One senses a gentleness and vulnerability as the young man averts his eyes downward and puts his arm protectively behind his niece.
