NOTES
This print is part of a commission to illustrate John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost" with twenty-four mezzotint engravings. The original visionary scenes of Heaven and Hell that John Martin created made this one of the most significant series of British book illustrations ever produced. Martin was part of the Romantic movement whose work conjured up sensations of the sublime.
