NOTES
Joel Shapiro uses compressed charcoal to situate sooty black lines next to ghostly erasures and subtle smoky areas created by the residual charcoal dust. The variety and expressiveness of his marks reveal a form that is not static and absolute, like the hard edges of Shapiro's geometric sculpture, but one that is mutable and indeterminate. The forceful lines of the triangular composition are further softened by the additions of fingerprints and smudges on the paper through which the presence and actions of the artist are revealed.
