NOTES
Strokes of cobalt blue, acid yellow, and dusty pink seem to dance and vibrate on the rich dark colors that fill the background of Michael Marshall's work on paper. Though the work's title suggests the orderliness of sheet music, Marshall filled the space with marks that move in every direction, like discordant musical notes. The composition calls to mind the wild vibrancy of free jazz, made popular during Marshall's youth by St. Louis ensembles like the Black Arts Group.
