NOTES
This watercolor is a superb example of the early work of the American Impressionist Childe Hassam. It is a portrait of his soon-to-be wife, Kathleen Maud Doane, sewing in bed. Maud lived in Hassam's hometown of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and was a family friend. He painted this watercolor of her a year before their marriage, when he was only twenty-four. Hassam captures Maud propped up in bed, taking a moment to look up from her sewing and think. He creates a warm and intimate setting by deftly capturing the patterns of the fabrics and woodwork in muted tones of ochres, browns, and yellows.

Notes:
This provenance is based on the research of Stuart Feld, which will be published in the forthcoming Hassam catalogue raisonné [letter dated January 24, 2003, SLAM document files]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are noted.

[1] Mrs. Cord Meyer was the daughter of Mrs. Alexander B. Thaw.

[2] Hirschl and Adler acquired the painting from Mrs. Cord Meyer on May 17, 1968 and sold it to G. Gordon and Marie Setz Hertslet on March 26, 1969.

[3] See note [2] Records show that the piece was possibly purchased from "A Collector's Choice (A Sales Exhibition to Benefit the City Art Museum)" [appraisal record, SLAM document files]. However correspondence between SLAM and Hirschl & Adler Galleries suggests that the work was purchased on March 26, 1969 [letter dated January 24, 2003].
