NOTES
Two women, one lounging and the other standing, rest against a lush background featuring the beach, the sea, and the mountains. Both women seem to look out to the water. The Caribbean islands of St. Martin and Martinique became important places of rest and work for Romare Bearden. The Intimacy of Water was inspired by the landscape of Martinique, an environment that held imaginative power over Bearden. He and his wife, Nanette, built a home in St. Martin, where they stayed for about half of the year, beginning in 1973.
