NOTES
This impressive print by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn shows the elderly Virgin on her deathbed. A doctor takes her pulse as the apostle Peter tenderly nurses her through her last moment on earth. The cherubs and an angel above the bed are ready to receive her spirit. In the foreground of this grand chamber, Rembrandt places dark, heavy furniture, providing a compositional anchor to the lightly sketched apparitions at top.
