NOTES
A car parked outside a service station rests beneath the spotlit image of a winged horse. A man looks out the station window into the hazy night. Elaine Mayes took this photograph at a Mobil gas station off the New York State Thruway. Visually seductive but ominous in feel, the glow of artificial light functions as a beacon to the traveler while also conveying the emptiness of a place dominated by a corporate logo. The Mobil Pegasus is one of the oldest marketing symbols still in use today.
