NOTES
In the lower portion of the album leaf, a fisherman walks away from his moored boat near stands of bamboo and fishing nets hung to dry, heading toward home in a fenced compound shaded by tall leafy trees. Layers of misty clouds cut across the center, their atmospheric quality suggesting summer heat and humidity. Tall mountains rise above the clouds and recede into the distance, giving the illusion of great spatial depth.

The poetic title, Fishing Village in Evening Glow, refers to one of the so-called “Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang,” evoking the bucolic scenery of two rivers in south-central China. This literary and painting theme, established by Song Di (c.1015–c.1080), provided centuries of inspiration for artists in East Asia.
