NOTES
This painting features a dense network of black flower images layered on top of each other. Many of Christopher Wool’s paintings consist of decorative patterns taken from sources such as wallpaper and textile designs. Wool silkscreened his chosen imagery onto smooth, industrial aluminum coated with white enamel paint. Through this dark, almost illegible painting, Wool negotiates the traditional artistic goal to make something “pretty” with the conflicting 20th century skepticism of such an impulse.
