NOTES
Augustus Saint-Gaudens is best known as a master of delicate, painterly portrait reliefs such as this one of the novelist and poet Robert Louis Stevenson. The writer suffered from tuberculosis, and Saint-Gaudens depicted him leaning against the pillows on his hotel room bed. The text accompanying the portrait is a poem by Stevenson dedicated to the mutual friend who introduced Stevenson and Saint-Gaudens.
