NOTES
A man waits by a lamppost earnestly clutching a paper bag, while a vendor leans against his cart beneath a brightly-colored umbrella. At first glance, the scene seems to be chaotic and without meaning. Yet, Helen Levitt was a master at tying disparate elements together through composition and color. For example, one can find many parallel objects: the aluminum lamppost and umbrella stand, the two street lights in the sky, and the Twin Towers in the far distance. Underlying these formal issues is a gentle affection for the city, no matter how gritty its appearance.
