Notes:
[1] Cornell often loaned artwork to institutions and individuals for indefinite periods of time and referred to them as "sanctuary loans." After loaning this box to an exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1966-1967, Cornell loaned it to the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts until 1970 as a "sanctuary loan." Cornell asked the Addison Gallery to contact the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Massachusetts to inquire if they would be interested in an indefinite loan. Williams College accepted the offer and received several boxes directly from the Addison Gallery [letter from R. Tassone to P. Paterson at the Museum dated February 3, 1997; copy of correspondence from S. Lane Faison, Jr., Director of Williams College Museum of Art, to Elizabeth Benton (Cornell's sister) and Hellen Jagger (Cornell's niece), dated January 2, 1973, SLAM document files].

[2] All of Cornell's artwork still in his possession at the time of his death passed to the Estate of Joseph Cornell, which is also known as The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation [Lufkin, Martha. "Art and law: Antagonism may soon cease." The Art Newspaper 75 (November 1997): 10]. This piece was still in the hands of the Williams College Museum of Art until November 1973 when it was shipped to a warehouse in New Jersey per order of the attorneys of the estate [letter from R. Tassone to P. Paterson at the Museum dated February 3, 1997, SLAM document files].
