Notes:
[1] Cornell often loaned artwork to institutions and individuals for indefinite periods of time and referred to them as "sanctuary loans." This piece was on loan to the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College (Oberlin, OH) from 1966 to 1977 [documentation from The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation, SLAM document files].

[2] All of Cornell's artwork still in his possession at the time of his death passed to the Estate of Joseph Cornell, which is also known as The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation [Lufkin, Martha. "Art and law: Antagonism may soon cease." The Art Newspaper 75 (November 1997): 10]. This box was still in the possession of the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College until October 1977 [email from Lucille Stiger, SLAM document files]. In a 1989 exhibition catalogue and a 1993 book, Pace Gallery is indicated as the lender [O'Doherty, Brian. "Joseph Cornell: Dovecotes, Hotels and Other White Spaces." New York: The Pace Gallery, 1989, p. 29 and Caws, Mary Ann, ed. "Joseph Cornell's Theater of the Mind: Selected Diaries, Letters, and Files." New York: Thames and Hudson, 1993, n.p.]. The Cornell Foundation consigned some of Cornell's boxes to Pace-Wildenstein to sell, but it does not seem that this work was actually owned by the Pace-Wildenstein Gallery [Lewis, Jo Ann. "An Artist's Estate: Agony of Success." The Washington Post (August 7, 1994), p. G6].
