NOTES
From an adjacent building, Andreas Feininger photographed the steel frame of a skyscraper under construction. The building is completed at its base but, at the level of Feininger’s camera, it is a transparent skeleton—a repeating modular grid, which is rapidly crystalizing into the same form as the adjacent building. It soars above view, seemingly untethered to the ground below.

Feininger was one of the leading staff photographers of Life magazine from 1943–1962, when the practice of photojournalism was at its creative peak. His innovative work explored a breadth of themes, including architecture, nature, and scientific research, but he is perhaps best known for his exhilarating views of New York City.
