NOTES
Francis Seymour Haden's distinctive treatment of this bucolic landscape balances the dense massing of the trees at left with the openness of the river and sky. He enhanced the density of the ink in the trees with a technique known as drypoint. By cutting lines directly into his metal plate with a sharp-pointed tool, he was able to print with velvety black lines. Drypoints by the 17th-century master Rembrandt van Rijn inspired Haden to make use of this expressive technique.
