NOTES
Werner Mantz’s view of the interior stairwell of a girls’ high school in Cologne is crisp and analytic, revealing each detail of the Art Deco patterning of the brick and stain glass. All is held within a tight geometric framework, even the rays of light which parallel the diagonal descent of the staircase. Yet, the overall effect is one of warmth, elegance, and intimacy.
