NOTES
The forceful presence of Fish Shows, an "Apsaalooké" (Crow) warrior, seems to push through the camera lens onto the page. Edward Curtis highlights many adornments associated with "Apsaalooké" warriors, including the customary hair style, large shell earrings, and necklaces. The warrior’s shirt, decorated with beads and ermine fur, symbolizes honor and bravery. Curtis’s early portraits were made with the use of a portable tent studio with adjustable louvers for light that permitted him to work in a controlled environment.
