NOTES
Henri Harpignies here displays the strong sense of structure and the flat planes of color which characterize much of his work. Harpignies was one of the most long-lived of all the artists associated with the Barbizon School and, as with so much of his work, this painting probably represents the Allier region in the center of France. Tiny figures in blue animate the scene.
