NOTES
Incised designs of parsley-like leaves and fans within arches and trailing vines ornament this small pitcher. Simplified, plant-inspired decoration was favored by many advocates of progressive design in the late 19th century. Within a year after the pitcher was made, however, the Rookwood Pottery introduced the Standard Glaze line, which featured naturalistic decoration. Ceramic artist and woodcarver Laura A. Fry introduced a mouth-blown airbrush to create the softly gradated backgrounds seen on Rookwood’s Standard Glaze pottery.
