NOTES
In this painting, the figure of David Poignand sits in a pool of light before a dark, cloud-filled sky, which focuses attention on his face and fine clothing. Poignand was a successful hardware merchant who worked in Boston from 1784 until 1809, and, according to family tradition, also made furniture.
