NOTES
A woman is knitting in a flat-backed armchair, facing the viewer's right. Behind her are books on a table and a lamp with a large shade against which the top of her head is silhouetted. The background, only partially indicated with dense patches of line, is dark.
Childe Hassam continued to use his wife as a model throughout his career. In this print she is shown in silhouette against a lamp in their home. A dense, almost abstract, arrangement of lines is used to render her dress, her hair, and the surrounding darkness.
