NOTES
Striding forward with the talons of its right foot bent over the supporting plinth, this image of an eagle captures the animal’s keen gaze and majestic form. It was probably made in Venice in the early 16th century, although its original function is not known. The Flemish artist and student of antiquities Peter Paul Rubens saw this sculpture in the early 17th century when he was in Italy.
