Notes:
[1] According to the Museum accession record, the painting was previously in the collection of the Duke of Valencia [SLAM document files].

[2] A 1933 article about this painting - considered at the time to be an authentic work by Zurbarán - indicates that it is from the collection of Maxwell Blake, Tangier [Fry, Roger. "A Still Life Painting by Zurbaran." "Burlington Magazine" (363:62) June 1933, p. 252-253]. Maxwell Blake served as the U.S. minister to Tangier in the early 1930s. The article also states that Blake acquired the painting in Spain.

[3] Payment receipt dated August 15, 1942 from the Museum to Maxwell Blake, Kansas City [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Administrative Board of Control of the City Art Museum, August 6, 1942.
