by 1945 - 1949
M. Knoedler and Co., New York, NY [2]
1949 -
Saint Louis Art Museum, purchased from M. Knoedler and Co. [3]
Notes:
This painting has a companion portrait of Sarah McClean Bolton's husband, Robert Bolton, now at the Telfair Museum of Art, Owens-Thomas House (OT1957.6) in Savannah, GA. The two paintings shared the same provenance until they were separated when the portrait of Sarah McClean Bolton was sold to the City Art Museum (now the Saint Louis Art Museum) by M. Knoedler and Co. in 1949. The Telfair Museum of Art purchased the portrait of Robert Bolton from M. Knoedler and Co. in 1957.
[1] This portrait of Sarah McClean Bolton was presumably commissioned from the artist by the Bolton family, along with its companion painting of Sarah's husband, Robert Bolton. Robert Bolton's will dated November 19, 1802 indicates that the portrait of his wife should go to his daughters upon his death [SLAM document files].
[2] This painting, along with its companion portrait, was included in a 1945 exhibition organized by M. Knoedler and Co., with American paintings from their galleries ["The American Scene from 1750," The North Carolina State Art Society, Raleigh, NC, cat. 3, 4]. The two paintings were also included in a 1947 exhibition, as lent by M. Knoedler and Co. ["The Colonial Americas," Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. Oct. 9 - Nov. 15, 1947, cat. 9, 10].
[3] Per invoice from M. Knoedler and Co. dated March 19, 1949 [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Administrative Board of Control of the City Art Museum, April 7, 1949.
