Notes:
[1] In early 1940, Valentine Dudensing held an exhibition on Cristofanetti at his gallery ["Paintings by Cristofanetti." Valentine Gallery, New York, January 3-27, 1940]. This painting was not included in the accompanying exhibition catalog [email from Jill Gage, The Newberry Library, Chicago, dated May 19, 2006, SLAM document files]; however, the exhibition suggests that Dudensing had close business dealings with the artist, and likely acquired the work directly from him.
[2] According to Museum notes, Pulitzer purchased the painting for $75 on 11/23/1940 [SLAM document files].
