NOTES
This print by Rembrandt van Rijn presents a rustic, thatched cottage, set against a typically flat Dutch landscape. A small landing leads back from the stream in the foreground towards the door of the cottage where two small figures stand. The large tree in front of the cottage dominates the left half of the composition. All along the bark of the tree trunk someone, most likely a dealer or a collector, added a wash, made from diluted ink, in hopes of making the impression appear darker and more substantial; this would make it look like an early pull off the plate and thus add to the impression's prestige and value.
