NOTES
Although the subject of this print, Desiderius Erasmus (1469–1536), was educated as a Catholic monk, he was long critical of the Roman Catholic Church. He did not, however, side with Luther’s Reformation. Albrecht Dürer departed from the norm by putting the compositional focus on the central Greek inscription: “His writings provide a better picture.” This hints at his approach, which emphasized the significance of Erasmus’s intellectual contribution over his temporal presence.
