NOTES
This tureen's undulating, curvilinear form and the lacy, cabbage-like finial on its cover embody the naturalism of mid-18th-century French rococo style. The acanthus foliage that forms the handles of the stand, which was made twelve years after the tureen, reflects the emphasis on symmetry and order of the classical style that was fashionable in 1773.

This tureen is part of a pair; the other is now in the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, OR. The pair remained together until at least the Parke-Bernet auction in 1941, where they were sold as separate lots.

[1] According to Christopher Hartop, a specialist on antique silver, the coat of arms on the tureen are those of Welbore Ellis, a member of the House of Commons [SLAM document files].

[2] The work was included in the sale of Mrs. Henry Walters in 1941 ["Collection of Mrs. Henry Walters" at Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, NY, April 30-May 3, 1941, lot no. 937].

[3] See note [2].

[4] The work was in the possession of a French private collector until it went to auction ["Property of a European Collector" at Christie's, New York, October 17, 2002, lot no. 158].

[5] Invoice and bill of sale from Christopher Hartop dated October 25, 2002 [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Collections Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, March 4, 2003.
