NOTES
Jörg Immendorff, working in West Germany, depicted a fictitious art studio shared by himself and three friends: Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, and A. R. Penck. Immendorff’s painting includes numerous references to the four artists’ works, personalities, and political beliefs. Penck, who lived in East Germany, is shown in the shadows, surrounded by imagery of the Eastern Bloc, a coalition of communist states during the Cold War. Baselitz, also from East Germany, is represented at a table supported by his characteristic inverted figures. Lüpertz stands before an oversized mirror and seems to plan his own coronation. Finally, the seated Immendorff puts on a necklace in the center. A sign protesting nuclear power sits on the artist’s table, indicating his antiwar beliefs.
