NOTES
Set against a muted abstract background, a curious form with outstretched wings rests atop a wooden cross. For this work, Walter Dahn, a member of the Cologne-based Mülheimer Freiheit artist group, referenced a 1974 painting by German artist Anselm Kiefer. Kiefer’s painting featured an artist’s palette with wings hovering over a tomb with a cross, alluding to the death and resurrection of artistic creativity. With irreverent humor, Dahn transformed Kiefer’s palette into an amorphous shape, making a caricature out of this symbol of the artist’s craft.
