NOTES
This small, brightly colored painting is composed of overlapping areas of yellow, red, blue, and green. Devoid of representational forms, Gerhard Richter's abstract watercolor strives for an undefined sense of space through the layering of pigments. Gerhard Richter professed not to like the unpredictability of watercolor, yet he was excited by the spontaneity and freedom it offered.

1986 -

Saint Louis Art Museum, partial and promised gift of Betsy Millard [2]

Notes:
The primary source of provenance is Betsy Millard [information for appraisals form, SLAM document files]. Other supporting documents are noted.

[1] An invoice dated February 18, 1986 addressed to Earl Millard from James Ropiequet Schmidt, St. Louis, MO suggests that Mr. Millard purchased this work from Mr. Schmidt. However, the information for appraisal form and a gallery label from Luhring, Augustine & Hodes, New York, NY found on the frame's verso confirm that Mr. Millard purchased the work from this gallery and that Mr. Schmidt served as a facilitator for the transaction.

[2] The terms of this partial and promised gift are detailed in the contract between Betsy Millard and the Saint Louis Art Museum [Gift and Loan Agreement between Betsy millard and SLAM, signed (no day or month) 2003, SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Collections Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, June 3, 2003.
