NOTES
This portrait of a stern-faced, bald man with a mustard yellow complexion is meant to embody the idea of corruption. This theme suggested itself to Thomas Schütte during his 1992 stay in Rome when magistrates exposed illegal financing of political parties in Italy. At that time Schütte was also interested in the theory of physiognomy, a 19th-century pseudoscience based on the idea that the features of the face are indicative of character. The artist dates the exact time of the drawing's completion in the lower right corner, "E 1627089228"-E series, completed at 16:00 hours, 27 August 1992, number 28.
