NOTES
Rosemarie Trockel portrays her mother as a skeleton in a coat and cap, walking past a wall with eight skulls. According to Trockel, these skulls represent days and the passing of time. The macabre tone Trockel strikes in this family portrait is meant to capture her mother's struggle with mental illness after World War II and her inability to repress the persistent flow of painful memories.
