NOTES
The design of this vase is bold, spare, and surprisingly forward-looking for 1904. It consists of an elongated sphere with four handles created by oval voids around the shoulder. Within the voids an incurving neck suggests a vase within the sphere. Applied to this sleek form is a deep green matte glaze. A vase of this extraordinary design was also exhibited in the Art Palace, the Museum's Cass Gilbert building, at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis.
