NOTES
This table is made of machine-made tubular brass elements embellished with stamped and cast flowers and foliage. Silver and steel-colored patinas and simulated hammered surfaces on the center panel evoke the contrasting materials and textures of traditional Japanese metalwork. The Aesthetic Movement's emphasis on simplification and reduction of ornament and its embrace of form inspired by Japanese art were well suited to "art brass" furniture made during the 1880s. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, is a lustrous, gold-colored metal that can be easily shaped into many forms and colored with silver plating or chemical patinas.
