NOTES
This traditional-looking soup tureen was a collaboration between the photographer Cindy Sherman and one of France's oldest porcelain manufacturers. The tureen's shape, rose color, and platinum decoration are copied from a tureen originally designed in 1756 for Madame de Pompadour. The image on the side of the tureen is characteristic of photographs in which Sherman uses herself as a model to portray clichés of women. This time she photographed herself as Madame de Pompadour, an avid patron of the arts credited with rescuing the Sèvres porcelain manufacturer from bankruptcy.
