NOTES
Shooting in downtown Saint Louis, photographer Aaron Siskind focused on the paint, stains, and signage on old planks of wood that had been reused in a new arrangement. Letters divorced from their original words float sideways, while a pair of fingers mysteriously points down from the sky. Siskind used a strong horizontal shadow running across the middle of the image as a substitute for a conventional horizon line, which creates a new kind of landscape that is as intriguing as it is impenetrable.
