NOTES
Flemish artist Jacob de Gheyn II was one of the finest draftsmen at the turn of the 17th century. This engraving is considered his earliest masterpiece. At center, Neptune sits astride a seahorse emerging from a bark-like seashell. A swirling crowd of mermaids and other fantastic marine creatures encircle him. The design is based on a metal plaque or bowl by Dutch sculptor, Willem van Tetrode.
