NOTES
In 1967 Lee Bontecou produced a series of intimately-scaled etchings which are indicative of her "crater" constructions, made by stretching canvas over rounded steel frames. In this etching, the gradation of value from white to black in combination with repeated oval shapes creates a hypnotic sense of spatial movement. The irregular texture of the inked plate printed onto handmade paper further emphasizes the dimensional presence of the image.

This print was created with the assistance of a master printer at Universal Limited Art Editions in Long Island where Bontecou worked. Since the 1960s, there has been a renewed interest in these collaborative workshops where artists with little background in printmaking can produce editioned works. As a result, printmaking experienced a revival that has resulted in many adventurous and innovative works which combine traditional techniques with a sculptural approach.

Notes:
[1] According to "Universal Limited Art Editions: A History And Catalogue, The First Twenty-Five Years", page 289, only one printer's proof exists. As Donn Steward was listed as the printer of this edition of Bontecou prints, it can be assumed that he was the first owner of this print.

[2] Per e-mail dated January 8, 2007 from Joe Goddu, director of Hirsch and Adler Galleries, Inc., to Francesca Herndon-Consagra, Mr. Goddu stated that the print was on consignment at the Hirsch and Adler Galleries, from James N. Heald, "a prominent New England collector" [SLAM document files].
