NOTES
The yellow tonalities and hard-edged compositional elements of this diptych make it different from Jerald Ieans’s other works. The painting shows another aspect of the artist’s chromatic explorations utilizing layering techniques and a limited palette. Although the surface shapes are strictly geometric, the irregular dimpling of the surface has a sensuous organic quality. The painting dates from 1992, when Ieans began to intensely explore the elliptical shapes that became an important motif in his work.
