NOTES
On the left edge of the page, two small figures provide scale for the dramatic scene of Hadley’s Falls. Both the graphic rendering and the accompanying text show the influence of British aesthetic conventions for the depiction of landscape. Here, William Guy Wall invokes the notion of the sublime—an immersive experience of nature filled with awe and tinged with fear. The artist’s low perspective emphasizes the power of the rushing water, the height of the stone cliffs, and the wild aspect of the country.
