NOTES
From a high vantage point, the viewer’s gaze is directed downriver past several sailing vessels toward West Point, a Revolutionary War site and America’s oldest military academy. The introduction of Robert Fulton’s steam-powered boat in 1807 provided a faster, more convenient mode of commercial river travel, and helped historical sites such as West Point become popular tourist destinations. The 1825 completion of the Erie Canal allowed further access to the interior of the country for curious travelers and the transportation of goods by connecting the Hudson River with the Great Lakes.
