NOTES
Plates one through eight of The Hudson River Portfolio illustrate the Upper Hudson, a landscape characterized by bountiful woods, rocky outcroppings, and numerous waterfalls. This part of the river was unnavigable and therefore not very accessible to travelers of the early 19th century. The sparsely-settled village of Luzerne was the northernmost point depicted in the portfolio. In the 1820s, Luzerne was home to those engaged in the lumber trade. In this image, the artist focused on two water-powered wood mills set against the dramatic backdrop of the Adirondack Mountains.
